If you are brand new
to the Toastmaster program, you may have many questions about who we were,
the specifics of the Toastmasters program, Toastmaster events, etc.
Here we tried to answer essential questions. Some other
Toastmaster FAQ sites are listed which cover the gamut of Toastmaster
program and activities. You may also contact us: |

| Who?
You! |
Toastmasters are from a variety of occupations
and backgrounds. We are homemakers, salespersons, doctors, auto mechanics,
executives, teachers, artists, college students, supervisors, attorneys,
engineers, and others. However, Toastmasters is only for individuals
18 years and older.
|
| What? |
Toastmasters learn by speaking to groups
and working with others in a supportive environment. Each meeting
gives members opportunities to practice speaking which has been prepared
or rehearsed, listening, evaluating, impromptu speaking, thinking, organizational
skills and leadership. The Toastmasters program is self-paced and
has been helping people improve for over 80 years.
|
| When? |
Depends on when and how often your Club meets.
See below under “How.” A “typical” Toastmasters
Club has 20 to 30 people who meet once a week (or every other week) for
about an hour.
|
| Where? |
District 30 includes Cook, DuPage, Lake and
McHenry counties in Illinois. See below under “How.”
|
| Why? |
Toastmasters is the place to practice; to
learn in a mutually supportive environment . . . and have some fun while
doing so.

| How Do I Join Toastmasters?
Joining a Toastmasters Club is easy, there is bound to be one near you.
WHEN & WHERE: Check our Find a Club section.
After you find a Club, attend a meeting.
Clubs have different personalities, so you may wish to visit several before
you make a decision on which to join. NOTE: Clubs occasionally
change their meeting time, day and location; best is to call ahead
to verify.
If there are no Clubs near you or at a convenient
meeting time, consider starting one!

| And,
How Much? |
| How much is your commitment to self-improvement?
Monetary Expense. How often do you attend
seminars or other training which costs, say, $500/day or more? Well,
check us out. There are three factors which determine your cost of
joining a Toastmasters Club:
1. Toastmasters International
Dues. Dues are collected twice a year and currently Toastmasters
International Dues are $18.00/six months or $36.00 for an entire year.
(You also receive The Toastmaster magazine every month.
And one more thing, this fee is pro-rated based on the exact month you
first join.)
NOTE: There is a proposal to
be voted on at the Toastmasters International Convention in Toronto in
August 2005 to increase Toastmasters International Dues to $27.00 every
six months or $54.00 for an entire year. (Again, this is a proposal
until the vote takes places in August at the International Convention in
Toronto.)
2. Toastmasters International.
There is a $16.00 brand new-member fee which includes “the basic manual”
and various Toastmasters program reference material.
3. Individual Club Dues.
Dues which are necessary to cover Clubs operating expenses and vary widely.
As an example, some Clubs have to pay for their meeting space and other
Clubs have really very little to pay for, including their meeting space.
|
The Point Is . . .
that with all the above included, your local Toastmasters Club is much
less expensive than a great many one day seminars!
